Bridging the Digital Divide

Those of us who have been in the tech industry for a long time know that the move to digitisation has been a gradual one, despite the headlines and hyperbole that might speak of ‘explosions’ or the like.

But it is a trend that has been brought into sharp focus by the COVID-19 pandemic, for better or worse. The unifying force of the web to unite people, be that workers connecting with colleagues, to students learning remotely or families staying in touch during lockdown. But it has also highlighting the “gross digital divide” that exists in the world.

I’m quoting Sir Tim Berners-Lee in a piece he penned this week for The Guardian, in which he spoke of the history of rebuilding after great global upheaval and the need to ‘ensure some good emerges out of the darkness’.

One of the things the response to COVID-19 has shown us is simply how vital access to high speed and reliable connectivity and technology is to society. And this is not just reserved for the younger, more tech-savvy generation.

There are many sectors within the broader technology industry that have become, if possible, even more indispensable to businesses. For example, cyber security vendors keeping remote workers safe, to HR vendors keeping them happy and engaged while away from the office.

To see first-hand the power of connectivity meant Sir Tim’s article struck a particular chord with the team and helping clients deliver on this promise and seek to bridge the digital divide is hugely satisfying.

Brands and organisations that align themselves to a purpose – and demonstrate their commitment to fulfilling it – will develop an authenticity that will help them stand out from the crowd. Passion goes a long way in communications campaigns and we look forward to seeing this digital divide further narrow by pioneering organisations that are seeking to make a positive impact on the world.
